Researchers Are Finding Out More About COVID-19 Impacts That Can Cause Long-Term Disabilities

CovidLong2

With a general decline in COVID-19 case counts across the country, most of us are happy to be able to return to our former pre-pandemic activities. Sadly, there are some for whom the virus was a life changing event. In addition to people who lost loved ones, there are those who were afflicted with the virus and continue to suffer ongoing impacts. Researchers are continuing to learn about the serious effects a prior case of COVID can have on your health and the long-term disabilities that can result.

Long Term Impacts From COVID-19

Since the early days of the pandemic, there have been reports of people suffering ongoing symptoms even after they recovered from COVID-19. Referred to as long-haulers, these people continue to experience health problems months or even years after being diagnosed.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been studying long-term or post-COVID conditions to determine underlying causes. Anyone who was infected by the virus could end up being impacted. Symptoms to be alert for include:

  • Excessive fatigue, to the point of interfering with daily life;
  • Ongoing fevers, despite a lack of illness or infection;
  • Brain fog, making it difficult to form thoughts or concentrate on tasks;
  • Dizziness upon exertion;
  • Sleep disturbances;
  • Chronic and severe headaches;
  • Changes in smell or taste;
  • Feelings of ‘pins and needles’ in extremities;
  • Digestive disorders;
  • Muscle aches;
  • Unexplained rashes.

These symptoms can last for long months or years, interfering with your ability to work or engage in your usual activities. Unfortunately, there is no definitive test to diagnose long-haul COVID, which makes obtaining long-term disability benefits a challenge.

Chronic Illnesses Caused By The Coronovirus

In addition to the troubling symptoms caused by long-haul COVID, researchers have determined that people who previously suffered the virus may also experience a variety of chronic illnesses in the aftermath. According to the Mayo Clinic, this can include:

  • Respiratory disorders, impacting breathing and lung functions;
  • Heart disease, making heart attacks, heart failure, and strokes more likely to happen;
  • Kidney failure, which can cause renal disease and may eventually require dialysis;
  • Liver failure, which increases the chances of potentially deadly infections and can lead to disorientation, seizures, and bleeding in the brain.
