Six Simple Reasons Behind Denied Social Security Disability Claims In Florida

SSDI_Claim3

Filing a claim for Social Security disability benefits in Florida can be a long, frustrating process. There are stringent qualification guidelines, complicated forms to fill out, and extensive medical records and other documents to submit.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has a complex process for approving benefits, and close to two-thirds of all claims end up being denied.  When this occurs, it can be for relatively simple reasons. Our Orlando Social Security disability lawyer shares six of the most common:

  1. You do not have the required work credits.

Social Security disability insurance (SSDI) can offset lost income in the event you are unable to work. However, in order to be eligible for these benefits, you must have earned the required work credits. You can earn up to four each year you work and need 40 to obtain SSDI benefits, ten of which must have been in the past 10 years.

  1. You do not have a qualifying medical condition.

In addition to the required work credits, you must also have a qualifying medical condition. The SSA provides an extensive listing of impairments that are covered, including common injuries, severe illnesses, and chronic health conditions.

  1. Your condition does not prevent you from working for a year or longer.

Even having a qualifying condition is not enough to entitle you to benefits. It must keep you from working for a year or longer. In addition to preventing you from performing tasks on your current job, it must also prevent you from what the SSA terms any Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA).

  1. You do not have adequate medical documentation of your condition.

Attending regular doctor visits is vital to receiving Social Security disability benefits. Your doctor must diagnose you as disabled, and you must be able to show any testing and treatment undergone due to your condition.

  1. You made a mistake in completing forms.

One of the most common and frustrating reasons for being denied Social Security disability benefits is simple errors in completing the forms. This includes misspellings, failing to put in certain types of information, not completing all sections of the application, and forgetting to include medical records or other documentation.

  1. Administrative errors were made.

SSA offices are chronically understaffed, and administrative errors on the part of those processing your benefits can result in denied claims. To prevent this, stay on top of communications you receive from the SSA, carefully review any information provided, and be aware of all deadlines that apply.
